Blues Workshop

(Footage used by permission of parents and staff)

We offer a variety of different workshop packages depending on your school’s needs. A workshop can be any length from half an hour to a full day.

Our standard workshop includes a walk through the history of the Blues from the days of slavery up

until the British Blues scene of the 1960′s. We examine how music was used to deal with the difficulties of racism and oppression.

Along the way there are live performances of classic blues and negro-spiritual songs as well as archive footage. We help the children write their own blues song, showing them structure as well as poetic-story development and talk through why blues is structured the way it is. We teach the children how to ‘scat’ (check out King Louie in the Jungle Book if you don’t know what scat is…) There is also the option to have the children make their own ‘diddly bow’ – a single stringed guitar made from household scrap.

We have experience working with SEN and nursery children as well as primary and secondary students. Whatever your educational needs, we’re sure we can work out a package to suit you.
