Demo :: The Old Rugged Cross
This is an old hymn with a new tune I’ve written.
On a hill far away
Stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old cross
Where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain
So I’ll cherish the cross
The old rugged cross
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the cross
The old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
For a crown (more…)
Demo :: We’ve heard of a land
This is a bit different to standard congregational songs in that it is more influenced by american country (think Ryan Adams rather than Dolly Parton). I wanted to write something that was a bit ‘different’ in feel.
1. We’ve heard of a land
Where peace reigns, not war
Where they live in harmony
With the King
With the King
2. Oh we know that land is beautiful
But when we look around
We see such hurt and pain
Again and again
Again and again
Give us a vision for that city
Where your glory is its light
And we have no fear of death
There is no night
Only light
Demo :: Song of an Older Brother
This is based on the story of the Prodigal Son and how many of us are much more like the older brother than we’d care to think…
Demo :: Wedding Song
I
wrote this song for my friends Ben and Judith’s wedding. It’s designed to be sung as a duet.
Btw – if you’re getting married and are interested in having a song written personally for your wedding then why not get in touch? Head along to the ‘wedding Song’ page for more details, prices and examples and get wedding music with a difference!
I’ve heard a love story
To beat the rest
A man gave his life
To give life to his dying bride
She had wondered far
But his love led him to die
And now she stands
All dressed in white
To walk with him again
And that’s what this is about
Giving you my vows
Promising to die for you
To present you perfect to that king
Demo :: We Will Sing
This is a congregational one that’s really stuck. I wrote it with Ben Murphy.
1. We didn’t deserve your mercy
Lost and slaves to self
But by your grace you saved us
You bought us to be yours alone
We will sing to you, oh King
We’re justified by grace
You have made us to be heirs
The hope of life with you
Secured
Demo :: Since We Came to Know you Lord
This is one that has stuck congregationally. It started out because I wanted to express that feeling you get a few years into being a Christian that you feel more sinful than you did when you became a Christian. The reality is that the Spirit is just showing you more and more of yourself as you grow. And that’s just an opportunity to understand God’s grace more…
1. Since we came to know you, Lord
Our sin’s far clearer than before
When we look upon that cross
We realise just what it cost
So we thank you God
That Jesus came to save the lost
The patience that you showed
To people lost in lies
The mercy overflows
To means we’ll never die
Demo :: Storm
Here’s the audio of a song we trialed at a gathering the other week. It turned out to be more a ‘solo’ song than congregational. I also had a bit of fun adding distortion to this version. Let me know what you think.
The song comes out of a difficult time and wanting to put a cry of faith into song. Included is a line ‘What he gives is good enough’. Often when we say something is ‘good enough’ we mean its the bare minimum. When it comes to Christ its the opposite – he really is good enough – we don’t need anything else. He’s the bare maximum.
I know that you
Will help me through this storm
Though I cannot see the path
I know you’ve walked before
So I’ll sing
Of the King
Who died and rose for us
And I’ll praise
Him who reigns
For what he gives is good enough
Demo :: Our King (incl. Sheet Music)
This is one of my oldest and is by far the most popular congregational song I’ve written – sung on at least 3 continents I hear! It came from a sermon I was doing on Mark. I got bored of writing the talk so thought I’d try and express some of it in song. I wanted to talk about what kind of King Jesus is, so we know what kind of people we should be. The chorus is stolen from John Newton (of Amazing Grace fame). Apparently he said these words (in the singular of course) on his death bed.
1. Our King is a king of mercy
He gave the blind their sight and the dumb their speech
He healed the sick and raised the dead
Our King is a king of mercy.
Even though our memories may fail us
May we always remember this:
We are great sinners
But we have a great Saviour in Christ.
